Internships
Sovereign Farm offers several internship opportunities. All opportunities are structured to allow students the opportunity to gain the experience and skills needed to pursue a career in the Thoroughbred industry while finishing their degree and/or maintaining employment. Racetrack Internships-
The Quarter Pole Internship- The Quarter Pole Internship focuses on helping students obtain the skills to become a professional exercise rider on a racetrack. This internship is offered to students who have completed our Starting Gate Internship. Students will assist in all morning tasks around the race stable including ( but not limited to) galloping horses, administering treatments, cleaning stalls, etc. Applicants must have extensive, prior riding experience as they can expect to get on two to three horses a day. Students are expected to work five days a week, three to fours a day. This is a paid internship, with a stipend paid bi-weekly.
The Starting Gate Internship-The Starting Gate Internship is designed to give students basics skills and knowledge to pursue a career working with racehorses. Students will be given the opportunity to work alongside our staff and work through a checklist that will ensure they are competent and skilled at handling racehorses in a track setting. Interns will be expected to participate in all morning tasks that may include (but not limited to)-hand walking, assisting in administering therapy treatments, feeding, grooming, cleaning stalls, tack walking (prior riding experience required), etc. Interns will be expected to work 8-12 hours per week (during normal track hours, 5:00am-11:30am). Most interns are full time students or have full time employment so this internship is designed to be flexible and work around an interns schedule. Interns that complete The Starting Gate Internship will be offered The Quarter Pole Internship when there is a vacancy. The Starting Gate Internship is an unpaid learning opportunity.
Bloodstock and Marketing Internships-
The Blue Hen Internship- Interns in this position assist and learn how to conduct pedigree research and develop marketing strategies. This is largely a remote learning opportunity and interns are only required to visit the farm or stable once a week for a meeting with the intern coordinator. The time commitment for this internship is approximately 12-15 hours a week. This is an unpaid learning opportunity.
Farm Management Internships-
The Kid Perfect Internship- This internship is named after the first foal produced under the Sovereign Farm banner, who became our first Graded Stakes Horse. The Kid Perfect Internship focuses on how to produce top equine athletes from conception to breaking (and everything in between-birth, weaning, sales, etc). There are part time and full time opportunities for this internship, both offer hourly compensation. Full time interns are eligible for housing (when available) along with hourly compensation.
